Calculate Your Ideal Pillow Loft
Your position is the biggest factor in determining loft height.
Measure from outside edge of one shoulder to the other. Standard is 16-17 inches.
Softer mattresses require lower loft pillows because you sink more.
Heavier body weight may require slightly higher loft for same position.
Personal preference can adjust recommended loft by 0.5-1 inch.
Neck problems often require precise loft matching.
Why Pillow Loft Matters
- Cervical Spine Alignment: The correct loft maintains the natural curve of your cervical spine, preventing pain and stiffness
- Neck Support: Too low = neck flexion and strain; Too high = reverse angle and tension
- Shoulder Gap: Side sleepers need height to fill the gap between shoulder and head for spinal alignment
- Pressure Relief: Wrong loft creates pressure points, leading to shoulder and neck pain
- Sleeping Position: Different positions need different loft angles for optimal support
- Individual Variation: Body shape, bone density, and muscle mass affect ideal loft
How to Measure Your Shoulder Width
- Stand with your arms at your sides in a relaxed position
- Have someone measure from the outside point of one shoulder to the other
- The measurement should be in a straight line across your back
- Average shoulder width for women: 14-16 inches
- Average shoulder width for men: 16-18 inches
- If you can't measure, use the weight-based estimate in the calculator
